CHARACTER INFO

Character: Davrin
Canon: Dragon Age: The Veilguard / Cannon point: After Rook disappears into the Fade
Age: early-mid 20s (estimate)

Background Information: Brief Background link, but there's not much there. For more information, Davrin was raised in a Dalish clan of elves, but chafed under their teaching and culture. He was sent to live with his uncle for a while, who kind of got his rebellious teenage nonsense under control (as well as his eagerness to hunt anything that moved). But he still left as soon as he could, and made a name for himself hunting monsters. Any and all monsters, including some horrible thing with tentacles the size of a hill.

At some point, he joined the Grey Wardens, and continued hunting. Whether it was hunting blighted creatures specifically, or just his usual monster fare, we don't know. He took up a home base, as much as possible, in the giant fortress of Weisshaupt. Along the way, he met several of the other Wardens we meet in game, specifically Lancit, Remi, Antoine and Evka. The former two brought him into their confidence as Griffon Trainers - the griffons were extremely important to the Wardens, and were declared extinct until two of them found a bunch of magically preserved eggs - and made Davrin the Bodyguard of the trio. One of the griffons took a shine to him - and despite how much he stomped around saying "i don't care", he even named the fluffball, "Assan".

Rook (the protagonist) meets him when Assan is a bit older, when Lancit and Remi have disappeared, and the Wardens are being picked off by a weird new monster Davrin has never heard of. Then joins up with the gang to stop a couple of blighted elven gods from wrecking the world thanks to a bald egg man guy named Solas. And off they all go to save the world.

His current worldstate has him surviving Tearstone Island, and his personal quest being resolved with the griffons becoming forest guardians, rather than soldiers, to parallel his own growth through the game's story.

Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Physically, he's imposing for an elf, who are usually seen as slight and small. He's also got a commanding presence, his confidence, his voice, are all pretty up front and strong. He is direct, doesn't bother mincing words, and tends toward the practical. Things like magic and the Fade hold no interest for him. It's not "real" in the sense the physical world is. When the group finds out elves came from literal spirits of magic, for example, Davrin doesn't want to discuss it. It doesn't matter to him - he was born a physical person, so were his parents, so what does it matter where their ancestors came from? The only thing he cares about is how difficult it might be for the present elves going forward to accept and deal with. That's a real problem, not a mystical one. There's a little bit of humor at his core, it's not something he shows to everyone - you have to get close to him in order to see it, in order for him to let it out.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
The power of determination. No, more seriously, Davrin needs a purpose to function. He has always needed something to push him forward, to work toward. First it was hunting, then it was the Wardens, and, eventually, Assan. If he doesn't have that, he's restless, he feels adrift. It's what drove him out of his Clan to start with - there was only routine and tradition, there was nothing challenging, there was no reason, no purpose except honoring tradition. Still, he keeps ties with his roots. He states often that despite the distance between them, he is, and always will be, Dalish. It's important to him no matter how far apart he holds himself. Part of the purpose he found, especially with the Wardens, was defending others, being that strong wall between them and the horrors of the world. That then extended to looking after others, especially when Assan came into the picture, and after Rook themselves (which is especially shown in the romance, when he is the one to reassure their leader, rather than the other way around). Davrin is a hunter, a weapon, but learns to make himself into more of a shield over the course of the game.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
Selflessness to the point of seeking sacrifice. He starts out almost disappointed he is when he fails to die in the process of slaying an Archdemon, he feels something is wrong with him, he's failed, and then has to learn how to keep existing, keep living, in the wake of it. This is what a Warden is supposed to do - they fight the Darkspawn, they fight Archdemons, their whole motto is about sacrifice in the line of duty. And Davrin subscribes to that idea wholeheartedly for the majority of the story. He can also be judgmental (see: Lucanis), deriding one of the team for being an assassin, killing people for money. Distrusting Lucanis for his status as an abomination, despite that not being something in Lucanis' control. He's competitive, especially regarding Emmerich, getting into brief spats over who is doing a better job training their respective proteges (Davrin has Assan, Emmerich has Manfred). But for these faults, he does warm up to the people on the team that he has issues with - by the end of the game, by the point of no return (story-wise), he's made peace and friends with the whole team. So he is capable of growth and making amends despite his flaws. Whether that extends to people he isn't saving the world with is another story though.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
The man carves and whittles to clear his head. He fills up his entire room at the Lighthouse with carvings, statuettes and drawings. He also is in the process of writing his own bestiary of everything he's fought, as a TAKE THAT to the rest of the world who writes incorrect bestiaries.

Abilities & Inventory:
Davrin's abilities are entirely physical. He's a Grey Warden - and a warrior, who uses sword and shield against enemies. He's not a mage, and his "magical abilities" are limited to sensing the Blight, Darkspawn, and the like. Since there is no Blight in this world, that's not really going to come into play. The Blight sense is tied to the fact Wardens are slightly Blighted themselves. He's a very competent tracker, hunter, and combatant. He knows how to survive in the wild, and is a big fan of carving and whittling.

Davrin will turn up with nothing but his starting sword and shield from the game... and Assan. Assan isn't inherently magical, doesn't have special powers other than being about as smart as a parrot, capable of at least understanding human speech, and understanding other animals. He's about the size of a Great Dane, with wings and talons. He'll fight alongside Davrin, take commands, and be almost entirely glued to his side a lot of the time.

ARMADA SELECTION

Paladins
Davrin is used to a similar command structure, was formerly part of a company of defenders against horrible monsters. He has an issue with assassins, including the one from your team, so a pirate-themed, or allied group is probably not going to go over very well. Besides, "pirates" would probably pose harm to Assan in some capacity (in his reasoning). He's the kind of guy to look out for people, for others, before himself.
